Associate Pastor (part time)

Job Summary: The REFINERY Church is looking for a part-time associate pastor to support the senior pastor, oversee adult, youth and children’s education, community outreach, and provide pastoral care to all ages.

Job Type: Part-time salaried position (18-20 hrs/week)

Location: Chula Vista, CA

Core Duties and Responsibilities


Adult Ministry -- Nurtures community life in the church through overseeing life groups and affinity groups as well as other ministries within the church.

  • Life groups: responsible for training and recruiting group leaders, scheduling and planning groups, obtaining curriculum when needed, and promoting groups via social media and bulletin.

  • Ministries and affinity groups: responsible for training and recruiting group leaders, as well as promoting the events and ministries.

  • Ministry fair: Organize and plan a ministry fair 1-2 times a year to promote ministries and groups, as well as recruit volunteers.

Children’s Ministry – Oversees leadership and curriculum of children’s ministry (nursery-5th)

  • Oversees, coaches, and meets monthly with Nursery/Pre-K Coordinator and Grades School Coordinators.

  • Responsible for obtaining curriculum Sunday classes.

  • Helps coordinators train and recruit leaders and volunteers for nursery-5th grades and lead volunteer quarterly trainings.

  • Helps coordinators lead special events for pre-k or grade school kids (e.g.: Fall Festival, Fun Days, VBS, etc).

Worship Service Development and Preaching

  • Serves on the regular preaching rotation schedule (every sermon series on Sundays), in addition to special services throughout the year.

  • Assists lead pastor in developing and maintaining yearly sermon series schedule.

  • Develops worship service orders and communicates them to worship team.

  • Assists lead pastor in coordinating and leading communion (monthly).

  • Develops and leads special services when needed (organizing worship service order, working with worship team to select appropriate music, creating a reflection time, etc.)

  • Conducts meaningful prayer and reflection times during the service.

  • Shares responsibility with lead pastor to communicate announcements during worship service.

Teaching and Education

  • Assists lead pastor with teaching Refinery 101 classes, Baptism classes, staff meetings, leadership trainings, special retreats.

  • Facilitates a life group as needed.

  • Creates and leads life group leader trainings.

Vision and Mission Leadership

  • Teams with lead pastor to develop a yearly spiritual, strategic focus and then help develop, communicate, and implement it within the church.

  • Develops a clear vision and mission for his/her areas of ministry.

  • Develops long-term professional goals. 

Pastoral Care

  • Oversees the Cares and Concerns Ministry, provide pastoral support for church members via counseling, phone calls, hospital visits, prayer, etc.

  • Refers to other professionals and therapists as appropriate.

  • Overseas the counseling ministry onsite – is one of the liaisons to the Center for Enriching Relationships (CER).


  • Organizes and participates in effective outreach projects and events to the community such as The Church Has Left the Building, VBS, Fall Festival, etc.

  • Works with lead pastor to maintain an effective church website and effective social media to draw new people. 

Administrative Leadership

  • Ministry Calendar – create and update the ministry/event calendar. Along with staff, plans and promotes events, trainings, baptisms, and special services.

  • Website and social media – regularly update ministry areas and events on church website and promotes on Facebook site

  • Bulletin – submits updates weekly to promote events

  • Finances -- Sets a clear, appropriate annual budget for each ministry area of responsibility and manages the spending. Effectively fundraises for special projects. 

  • Site Development and Maintenance -- Share responsibility for the site God has given the church by maintaining our commitment to renew church spaces that have aged or deteriorated and ensure that the landscape and church building honors God and communicates the positive values of the church to the community.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mature follower of Christ

  • Experience supervising volunteers and staff

  • Have a relational style of ministry

  • Possess moral integrity

  • At least one year of pastoral leadership experience serving in adult or youth/children’s ministry.

  • Education: Bible Degree, BA or Masters

Compensation: $20K/year, plus 2 weeks paid per year, plus seven holidays: New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If these fall on a normal day off, then the next day may be taken. 

Weekly Hours: Sunday mornings (9:30 am-12:30pm), office hours/weekly prep (days flexible), meetings: weekly with Senior pastor, monthly with staff, and monthly with children’s coordinator/s.
